MU Meeting 19th October – John Clowes on garden design

The meeting was attended by 27 members and included a very interesting talk by John Clowes, entitled: “Twenty years of garden design and how it happened”.

Barbara Street opened the meeting and Margaret Hardwick led the prayers.

John began by telling us about his father’s interest in his childhood garden in Timperley but that his own interest and passion only began when he married and had his own home to garden. He joined the Tatton Garden Society and learnt many skills from the members and the visits they organised. In 1979 he bought his present home in Holmes Chapel with a large garden which he landscaped and planted.

He had studied metallurgy at University followed by a career in the power industry but, taking early retirement in 1994, he took up garden design professionally, realising there was a niche in the market.

With the group ‘Garden Designers of Cheshire’ he helped to build a gold medal winning garden at the RHS Tatton Flower Show.

John gave us some wonderful tips for working with our gardens.

Val Cragg thanked him on our behalf and a donation is being made to St Luke’s
Hospice.
