Chester Cathedral celebration of MU 150th Anniversary: 9 Aug 2026
On Sunday 9th August, our Congleton Deanery MU groups joined with other MU groups from the Diocese to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Mothers’ Union, started by Mary Sumner, on Mary Sumner Day, in a special service of Evensong.
Ann Peach had kindly organised a coach for us all to travel to Chester, which made the journey very easy. We had the honour of having the Queen’s College, Cambridge choir accompany our singing and sing the psalms, which made it extra special.

Our Diocesan banners were also on display, celebrating both the work that Mothers’ Union members support in the Chester Diocese and our 150th anniversary message: “Lighting the way for generations to come”.

Afterwards tea, coffee and cake was provided as refreshments, before we made our way home again. It was a very special celebration and a lovely afternoon out.
Our next branch meeting will be on Wednesday September 16th, when Lisa Maddock will be joining us to talk about the new Recycling Scheme in Cheshire East – she is a very amusing and entertaining speaker. Do come and join us at 2pm in the Church Hall
