O God, make speed to save us.

O Lord, make haste to help us.

Your words have I hidden in my heart,
That I should not sin against you.

The earth is the Lord’s and all that fills it,
The compass of the world and all who live in it.

For he has founded it upon the seas
And set it firm upon the rivers of the deep.

‘Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord,
Or who can rise up in his holy place?’

‘Those who have clean hands and a pure heart,
Who have not lifted their soul up to an idol,
Nor sworn an oath to a lie:

‘They shall receive a blessing from the Lord,
A just reward from the God of their salvation.

Such is the company of those who seek him,
Of those who seek your face, O God of Jacob.

Psalm 24

Hearing and responding to the Word of God

Bible readings can be found on the church website, or Facebook page.

Read them out loud then finish with this response:

This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

The wilderness and the dry land shall rejoice,
The desert shall blossom and burst into song.

They shall see the glory of the Lord,
The majesty of our God.

Strengthen the weary hands,
And make firm the feeble knees.

Say to the anxious, ‘Be strong, fear not,
Your God is coming with judgement,
Coming with judgement to save you’.

Then shall the eyes of the blind be opened,
And the ears of the deaf unstopped;

Then shall the lame leap like a hart,
And the tongue of the dumb sing for joy.

For waters shall break forth in the wilderness,
And streams in the desert;

The ransomed of the Lord shall return with singing,
With everlasting joy upon their heads.

Joy and gladness shall be theirs,
And sorrow and sighing shall flee away.

From Isaiah 35

Now it is time to awake out of sleep,
For the night is far spent and the day is at hand.

Now is our salvation nearer than when we first believed,
For the night is far spent.

Let us therefore cast off the works of darkness
And put on the armour of light,
For the day is at hand

Put on the Lord Jesus Christ
And make no provision for the flesh,
For the night is far spent and the day is at hand.

From Romans 13

‘Behold I am coming soon’, says the Lord,
And bringing my reward with me,
To give to everyone according to their deeds.

‘I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last,
The beginning and the end.’

Blessed are those who do God’s commandments,
That they may have the right to the tree of life,
And may enter into the city through the gates.

‘I, Jesus, have sent my angel to you,
With this testimony for all the churches.

‘I am the root and offspring of David,
I am the bright morning star’.

‘Come!’ say the Spirit and the bride;
‘Come!’ let each hearer reply.

Come forward, you who are thirsty,
Let those who desire take the water of life as a gift.

Revelation 22:12ff

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,

My spirit rejoices in God my Saviour,

For he has looked with favour on his lowly servant.

From this day all generations will call me blessed;

The Almighty has done great things for me

And holy is his name.

He has mercy on those who fear him,

From generation to generation.

He has shown strength with his arm

And has scattered the proud in their conceit.

Casting down the mighty from their thrones

And lifting up the lowly.

He has filled the hungry with good things,

And sent the rich away empty.

He has come to the aid of his servant Israel,

To remember his promise of mercy.

The promise made to our ancestors,

To Abraham and his seed for ever.

Luke 1:46ff

The Advent Collect

Almighty God, give us grace that we may cast away the works of darkness, and put upon us the armour of light,
now in the time of this mortal life, in which thy Son Jesus Christ came to visit us in great humility;
that in the last day, when he shall come again in his glorious Majesty, to judge both the quick and the dead,
we may rise to the life immortal;
through him who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Ghost, now and ever.

Almighty and everlasting God,
we thank you that you have brought us safely
to the beginning of this day.
Keep us from falling into sin or running into danger;
order us in all our doings and guide us to do always
what is righteous in your sight;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Almighty God,
Give us grace to cast away the works of darkness
And to put on the armour of light,
Now in the time of this mortal life,
In which your Son Jesus Christ came to us in great humility;
That on the last day,
When he shall come again in his glorious majesty
To judge the living and the dead,
We may rise to the life immortal;
Through him who is alive and reigns
with the Father and the Holy Spirit,
now and for ever.

Let us pray to the Lord,
who is our refuge and stronghold.

For the health and well-being of our nation,
that all who are fearful and anxious
may be at peace and free from worry:

Lord, hear us,
Lord, graciously hear us.

For the isolated and housebound,
the vulnerable and the helpless,
the mistreated and the hurt:

Lord, hear us,
Lord, graciously hear us.

For our homes and families,
our schools and young people, health workers and carers,
and all who are in need or distress:

Lord, hear us,
Lord, graciously hear us.

For a blessing on our local community,
that our neighbourhoods may be places of trust and friendship,
where all are known and cared for:

Lord, hear us,
Lord, graciously hear us.

Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation
but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power,
and the glory are yours
now and for ever.

May the Lord, when he comes,  Find us watching and waiting.

Let us bless the Lord.

Thanks be to God.
